Shekhar later became the president and the chairman of the troupe (by then renamed Mylapore Nataka Arangam). Shekhar and his Mylapore Boys provided stiff competition for another popular drama troupe in Madras, The Crazy Troupe, led by Crazy Mohan. They have also worked together, with Crazy Mohan writing two plays for Shekher's troupe, Crazy Thieves in Palavakkam and Oru Sondha Veedu Vaadagai Veedagiradhu, and the cult comic caper Kadhanayagan starring Pandiarajan and Shekher.

Deva is an Indian film composer and singer. He has composed songs and provided background music for Tamil films in a career spanning about 20 years. Many know his gaana songs, written mostly using Madras Tamil. He is known as the "Father of Gaana Genre" in the Tamil film industry.

Deva has composed music for many films within a very short period. He debuted as a film music director in the film Manasukkeththa Maharaasa in 1989. In the intervening years he has composed music for a total of more than 400 films.

Deva was born to M. C. Chokkalingam and M. C. Krishnaveni. Even in his childhood, Deva was attracted to the world of music. Teaming up with Chandra Bose, he staged many musical programmes. He started learning classical music under Dhanraj and completed a course in Western music at Trinity College of Music in London. His son Srikanth Deva is also a music director, as are his brothers, who have formed the duo Sabesh-Murali. His nephew Jai is an actor.

Before coming to cinema, Deva worked for some time in the television field. In those days Deva's brothers were working in the musical troupes of Illayaraja and other music directors as instrumentalists. But Deva took special interests for self-improvement in his profession and at the same time he was looking for chances to enter movies. But the benefits of those efforts did not bear fruit easily. Only after much hardship he managed to enter the field with the help of some friends and his four brothers. Just after his entry, the production work of those films, for which negotiations were on for fixing Deva as the music director, could not get completed and some other films with his music could not be released at all.

Deva continued his search for an opening, which finally began yielding results in 1989. His first film, Manasukkeththa Maharaasaa, was released in 1989. He was then called to work on the movie Vaikaasi Poranthaachu. This film was a huge hit and Deva was praised for his work. After the release of Vaikaasi Poranthaachu, his name became known throughout the Tamil community. So far he has composed music for more than 400 films, which include Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. He is also famous for his compositions for religious films. He was widely acclaimed for his scores for Rajinikanth starrer Basha. His other famous compositions include Annamalai and Baasha, both starring Rajnikanth.

Behind Deva's great success, there are his brothers also, which fact he won't deny too! He says: 'If I stand at this height as a music director, the supportive reason behind this is my brothers. They too work hard like me. That's why it was possible for me to accomplish the task of composing music for such huge number of films! So to say, all my 4 brothers have their own share in my present success!'

As a brother Deva showers upon them (brothers) his heart-felt felicitations and his brothers, on their part, continue to take greater pains professionally, to add to the well-meaning achievements of Deva in the future also! This quality of Deva has enhanced his image among the top brass of the cineworld! Hence, veteran music director M.S.Viswanathan has conferred upon Deva the most suitably coined title, "Thenisai Thentral". As if doing full justification to this title, Deva's tunes and musical scores never fail to pour sweet honey in the form of melodious songs into our 'yearning' ears! Among the films whose music was composed by Deva, 7 became silver jubilee hits! 100 days films were 34.

He recently made a special appearance in the film Modhi Vilayadu.

On 31 July 2011, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha has made him as the head of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nadaga Mandram.

Veteran music director M. S. Viswanathan conferred the title Thenisai Thendral upon Deva for his contributions.

In 1990, he received his first Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director. He received the Tamil Nadu Government's Kalaimamani Award in the year 1992. In 1995, the film Aasai brought him another state film award. For Baasha, he got the Tamil Nadu Arts and Cultural Academy Award. He has also been honoured by awards from popular journals like Dinakaran, Cinema Express and Screen.

One of the major criticisms against Deva is plagiarism. He is known for lifting snippets and sometimes even the full song from famous old and recent English pop songs and using them as his own. Some of the alleged lifts include famous boy band Blue, the song "Alane" by Wes, Pakistani band Junoon, English bands Sasha, Linkin Park, The Wonders, Backstreet Boys, etc.

He gained fans as a dancing star and went on to establish himself as one of the all time top ten greatest and most popular actors of India, particularly recognized for his role as the street dancer Jimmy in the 1982 Bollywood movie Disco Dancer. He also attracted worldwide audiences, particularly in the former Soviet Union where he became a household name for his role in Disco Dancer. He later won two more National Film Awards for his performances in Tahader Katha (1992) & Swami Vivekananda (1998). Chakraborty has appeared in about 350 films including Bengali, Oriya, Bhojpuri and Punjabi pictures.

Chakraborty owns the Monarch Group, which has interests in the hospitality sector and educational sector. He has also started the production house Paparatzy Productions. He is the Chairperson of Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union which take care the welfare of cine workers and resolve their demands and problems. The Television show Dance India Dance where Chakraborty is the Grandmaster has already entered in Limca Book of Records and Guinness World Records Chakraborty played a crucial role of mediator between Pranab Mukherjee and Mamata Banerjee, winning the Congressman the support of the Trinamool chief in the 2012 presidential election. A comic book named Jimmy Zhingchak has been made based on Chakraborty.

He was educated at the renowned Scottish Church College in Kolkata, from where he earned his degree in Chemistry. After that he attended and graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He was a staunch Naxalite before entering films, but tragedy struck his family when his only brother was electrocuted and killed in a freak accident. He returned to his family and left the Naxalite fold, even though this posed a grave risk to his own life. He had also undergone expert training in Martial Arts to the grade of black belt that made him excel in fight sequences.

Mithun Chakraborty made his debut in the 1976 Mrinal Sen-directed film Mrigaya, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. His film Mera Rakshak was a success of 1978. Chakraborty rose to stardom with the low budget Ravikant Nagaich directed spy film Surakshaa, released in 1979. The film was so successful, that many movies starring Chakraborty in the lead role were launched. The combination with director Deepak Bahry also happened for the first time in 1979 with Tarana. Another important film for Chakraborty in the late 70s was Prem Vivah, directed by Basu Chatterjee.

Chakraborty had over 110 releases in the 1980s. Disco Dancer released in 1982, became a blockbuster and made Chakraborty a star. He had also done lighter roles in Shaukeen, Sun Sajna and Aamne Samne. As Amitabh Bachchan moved to politics, Chakraborty became Bollywood' s second highest paid star after Bachchan. He also became India's highest tax payer in 1986. Chakraborty went on to star in a number of romantic and family dramas during the 1980s, such as Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Ghar Ek Mandir, Pyaar Jhukta Nahin, Swarag Se Sunder and Pyaar Ka Mandir. These films remain his most commercially successful films to date.

He was also widely recognized as an action hero in films like Jagir, Jaal, Dilwaala, Watan Ke Rakhwale and Waqt Ki Awaz. His performances never won any award in 1986 and 1987 as Filmfare Awards was never announced due to technical reasons.  As Chakraborty always had higher number of releases, sometimes it affected the business of his own films as happened in 1989, where he had a record 19 films.

Chakraborty had another 100 plus releases in this decade too, starting with Agneepath which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Films like Shandaar,Gunahon Ka Devta, Pyar Ka Devta,Trinetra and Mere Sajana Saath Nibhana followed. In 1992, the critically acclaimed Bengali film Tahader Katha won him his second National Film Award for Best Actor. In this period he decided to take a break from Mumbai. He shifted his entire family to Ooty and he constructed The Monarch Hotel. Chakraborty then decided to do movies only to be shot at Ooty and nearby locations and he provided discount rates to the film crew to stay in his hotel as well. This strategy paid off as numerous films starring Chakraborty was launched every week, so he shifted his focus from mainstream Hindi cinemas to low-budget movies. Dalaal was released followed by other low-budget films like Phool Aur Angaar, Ravan Raaj: A True Story and Shapath, which created a market for low budget productions.

Jallad won him the Filmfare Best Villain Award and Star Screen Award Best Villain for the year 1995. His economical film production was popular as Mithun's Dream Factory. Even he could not do Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar as his character had to crop his hair, which would have affected his other 15 films at that time. By this time, Chakraborty held the record for appearing in the most number of Hindi films as a hero. A third National Award followed in 1998, this time for the Best Supporting Actor, for his portrayal of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, in G. V. Iyer's Swami Vivekananda. Once again the overdose of Chakraborty releases affected the business as 1998 and 1999 itself had almost 30 releases.

This decade proved Chakraborty as a businessman more than a star as low-budget filmmakers were given their due by Mithun. He operates hotels in Mudhumalai and Ooty in Tamil Nadu, Darjeeling, Siliguri and Kolkata.

Mithun's Dream Factory films still continued to hold the audiences, moreover he started doing more Bengali films and gave consistent films like Titli, Guru, Barood, Yuddho, Tulkalam and Rehmat Ali. Chakraborty also made a comeback to the mainstream Hindi film industry in 2005 with the film Elaan.

After a few supporting roles in films such as Lucky: No Time for Love (2005) and Dil Diya Hai (2006), he starred in Mani Ratnam's film Guru. He was also acclaimed for his villainous role in Kalpana Lajmi's Chingaari (2005). His 2009 movie Zor Lagaa Ke...Haiya! won multiple International awards and Chal Chalein was appreciated by critics for its bold theme. Critically acclaimed Phir Kabhi with Dimple Kapadia had a première through a direct to home (DTH) release in September 2009 and won as many as six awards in as many categories at the Los Angeles Reel Awards 2009.

Chakraborty's recent films include Veer (2010) with Salman Khan, Golmaal 3 (2010) with Ajay Devgn and in 2012, he done 3 films with Akshay Kumar, Housefull 2, OMG – Oh My God! and Khiladi 786. His home production Enemmy (2013) was with his own son Mimoh Chakraborty and actor Sunil Shetty.

He also done Anthony D'Souza's Boss (2013) with Akshay Kumar. His first release of 2014 Kaanchi... directed by Subhash Ghai where he played an evil politician wearing facial prosthetics has won him critical acclaim. Now he is working on It's Entertainment with Akshay Kumar and Kick with Salman Khan and Hawaizaada with Ayushmann Khurrana.

Parallel to his Bollywood career, Mithun Chakraborty has also worked in Bengali, as well as in realistic or arthouse movies including Troyee, made in 1982. He appeared in director Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Tahader Katha which got him his second National Award in 1992.
