Alia Bhatt is a British film actress and singer who works in Bollywood. Born into the Bhatt family, she is the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan, and the cousin of actor Emraan Hashmi.

After making her acting debut as a child artist in the 1999 thriller Sangharsh, Bhatt played her first leading role in Karan Johar's moderately successful drama Student of the Year (2012), which earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She received critical acclaim for portraying emotionally intense characters in the road drama Highway (2014), which won her a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress, and the crime drama Udta Punjab (2016). Bhatt established herself in Bollywood by starring as the female lead in the romantic drama 2 States (2014), the romantic comedy Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), and the drama Kapoor & Sons (2016), all of which earned over ₹1 billion (US$15 million) worldwide.

Early life and film debut

Bhatt was born on 15 March 1993, to Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan. Her father is of Gujarati descent and her mother is of Kashmiri and German ancestry.  Director Nanabhai Bhatt is her paternal grandfather. She has an elder sister, Shaheen (born 1988) and two half-siblings, Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt. Actor Emraan Hashmi and director Mohit Suri are her maternal cousins, while producer Mukesh Bhatt is her uncle.  Bhatt was educated at the Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai.

Bhatt's first acting role was as a child artist in Sangharsh (1999), starring Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta where she played the younger version of Zinta's character.  She had her first leading role in 2012 with Karan Johar's Student of the Year, alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan.  She portrayed the role of Shanaya Singhania, a sophisticated teenage girl who is in a relationship with Dhawan's character but is attracted to the character played by Malhotra. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama wrote of her performance, "Alia's role is reminiscent of Kareena Kapoor in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Stylish, classy, born with a silver spoon, she's someone who loves to flaunt not just her clothes and bags, but also her riches. Extremely photogenic, Alia makes a super-confident debut."  Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times also mentioned the similarities with Kapoor's character, but noted that her performance was "without the killer attitude."  Student of the Year grossed ₹960 million (US$14 million) at the box office.

Rise to prominence (2014–15)

Bhatt established herself in Bollywood with her three film releases of 2014.  She played the protagonist of Imtiaz Ali's road film Highway opposite Randeep Hooda. Her portrayal of a lonely teenage girl who develops stockholm syndrome after being abducted was acclaimed by the critics.  Rachit Gupta of Filmfare mentioned that "[a]t 20, it’s surprising how Alia has got so many deft nuances right. It’s as if the actor has grown with the character. She is truly one of the most promising new actors in Hindi films." Sonia Chopra of Sify added that Bhatt is "[c]ompletely immersed" in her role, and that "Alia’s uninhibited and raw performance will have you emotionally invested in her character all through." Though the film underperformed at the box office, Bhatt won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and also garnered a Best Actress nomination at the ceremony.

In Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala's joint production 2 States, Bhatt starred opposite Arjun Kapoor. An adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel of the same name, it narrates the story of two IIM Ahmedabad students who encounter trouble in convincing their parents to approve of their relationship. For her role as Ananya Swaminatham, a headstrong Tamil girl, she learnt the language.  Critics were appreciative of her performance with Rediff.com publishing that Bhatt "really grows into the character and makes you believe that she's a career-oriented IIM-A grad." Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express added that Bhatt was a "surprise" and was "easy and fresh and natural."  The film emerged as a top-grossing production, earning over ₹1.7 billion (US$25 million) worldwide.

Bhatt's final film role in 2014 was as Kavya Pratap Singh, a Punjabi girl who engages in a romantic affair with a stranger a few days prior to her wedding, in the romantic comedy Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Co-starring Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Shukla, the film was described as a tribute to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) by Johar, who served as producer.  Writing for India Today, Rohit Khilnani thought that Bhatt had pitched in "one of her best performances so far", though Nandini Ramnath of Mint found her performance to be lacking in subtlety, writing that she was "more comfortable acting out her feelings through dialogue and actions". 
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania proved to be her second consecutive release to earn over ₹1 billion (US$15 million).  Her accomplishments in 2014 led Box Office India to label her as the top Bollywood actress of the year.

Also in 2014, Bhatt appeared in a short film on women's safety, entitled Going Home, from director Vikas Bahl.  She next reunited with Bahl to film the romantic comedy Shaandaar. Released in 2015, the film featured Shahid Kapoor and Bhatt as two insomniacs who fall in love during a destination wedding.  Kunal Guha of Mumbai Mirror criticised the film and wrote that Bhatt "socks life into her character but fails to pump any into this film".  Shaandaar earned little at the box office.

2016 onward

In 2016, Bhatt played the supporting role of a lively young girl with a buried past in Kapoor & Sons, a drama about a dysfunctional family starring Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan. The film proved to be a critical and commercial success.  Bhatt then took on the part of a poverty-stricken Bihari migrant in the Indian state of Punjab in Udta Punjab (2016), a crime drama about substance abuse from the director Abhishek Chaubey. The intense role marked a significant departure from the mostly light-hearted parts she had previously played, and in preparation, she watched documentaries on drug abuse and learned to speak a Bihari dialect.  The film, co-starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh, generated controversy when the Central Board of Film Certification deemed that the film represented Punjab in a negative light and demanded extensive censorship before its theatrical release.  The Bombay High Court later cleared the film for exhibition with one scene cut.  Bhatt's performance in the film was critically acclaimed, with several commentators believing that it was her best performance to that point.  Raja Sen of Rediff.com wrote that Bhatt "commits to her accent and deals with the film's most unsavoury section, and is stunning during an incendiary speech that elevates the entire film to a whole other level."

As of June 2016, Bhatt has three upcoming projects. She has completed filming for Gauri Shinde's drama Dear Zindagi, in which she plays the lead role alongside Shah Rukh Khan.  She is filming opposite Varun Dhawan for the romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which will serve as the second installment of a franchise that began with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.  In addition, she has committed to star with Ranbir Kapoor in Ayan Mukerji's untitled fantasy film about a man with superpowers.

Other work

Bhatt has performed playback singing for the song "Sooha Saaha" in Highway (2014). A. R. Rahman, the composer of the film, invited her to his music school to undergo training.  In 2014, she sang the unplugged version of the song "Samjhawan", for the composers Sharib-Toshi, in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.  In 2016, she sang an alternate version of the song "Ikk Kudi", for the soundtrack of Udta Punjab, with her co-star Dosanjh.

In addition to acting in films, Bhatt has performed at the Filmfare, Screen and Stardust award ceremonies, and has also participated in a stage show in Hong Kong alongside Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra.  In 2013, she performed at a charity event with Dhawan, Malhotra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor and Huma Qureshi to raise funds for the flood-affected victims of Uttarakhand.  In August 2016, she performed in various cities of the USA as a part of the "Dream Team 2016" tour, also featuring fellow actors Dhawan, Malhotra, Kapur, Katrina Kaif, and Parineeti Chopra, as well as filmmaker Karan Johar and rapper Badshah.

She also took part in a campaign for PETA to raise awareness about homeless animals.  She also launched her own line of clothing for women in association with the online fashion portal Jabong.com; she described the collection to be "very simple" and "very me".  She is also the celebrity endorser for a number of brands and products, including Coca-Cola, Garnier and Maybelline.

Suza Kumar is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Tamil language films. After making her debut in the Tamil film Ethir Neechal (2013), she has been seen in films including Veeram (2014) and Vellikizhamai 13am Thethi (2016). Born in Chennai, Suza Kumar initially pursued a diploma in cinematography at the New York Film Academy and then a filmmaking course at the SAE Institute in Singapore, before returning to India.

She subsequently moved into modelling, before receiving an offer from Wunderbar Films to work as an actress.  She made her acting debut through Ethir Neechal (2013), where she portrayed a brief role as Sivakarthikeyan's first love interest. She was featured in the song "Nijamellam Maranthu Pochu" and won notice from critics for her role in the film.  Her performance also got her an offer to feature in a small role in Siva's Veeram (2014), starring Ajith Kumar.

She later starred in two horror films, Vellikizhamai 13am Thethi and Kanneer Anjali, both of which had smaller budgets than her first two films.

Manjima Mohan is an Indian film actress, working predominantly in Malayalam and Tamil films. Manjima, hailing from Palakkad, Kerala, started her career as a child artiste in late 1990's and early 2000's.Manjima Mohan is the daughter of cinematographer Vipin Mohan and dancer Kalamandalam Girija.After completing her Plus Two at Nirmala Bhavan Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, she pursued a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics from Stella Maris College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Mahendran is an Indian film actor who works in Tamil language films. Beginning his career as a child artist, Mahendran made his breakthrough as a lead in Vizha (2013). He also holds an entry in the 'India Book of Records' for "the most number of movies as child artist"; he has acted in more than 100 movies in over six languages, including Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, as on April 2, 2013.

Mahendran appeared in several films as a child artiste, winning the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Child Artist and thr Nandi Award for Best Child Actor on two occasions each. He also appeared on the Sun TV dance show Masthana Masthana as a participant in 2009.The actor went on to appear alongside Malavika Menon in Vizha, a film directed by Barathi Balakumaran. The film is based on the award-winning short film Uthiri, and portrays the love story of Mahendran's character Sundaram, who plays the thappu instrument at death functions, and Rakkamma (Malavika), an oppari singer. The film opened to positive reviews in December 2013, with critics praising Mahendran's lively portrayal.His first Telugu film, First Love opposite Amitha Rao released on the same day, with a low key release.

Mahendran's upcoming projects include Aakki, which is in its post-production stage, where he plays a hockey player. He has also shot for vindhai directed by lawraa,a commercial entertainer .shooting for his next film on full swing titled Viraivil Isai, directed by debutant Prabhakaran, The shooting of the film began at Kodambakkam this month. The female lead for the film is yet to be decided.The music of the film is composed by debutant M. S Ram and cinematography is by Shiva.

Anaika Soti is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films. After making her debut in Ram Gopal Varma's bilingual film Satya 2 (2013), she went on to feature in Vasanthabalan's Tamil period film Kaaviya Thalaivan.


Anaika Soti was born on 14 January 1991 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh and soon after shifted to Hong Kong with her family for four years. She subsequently moved to Mumbai and studied in Panchgani throughout her education, before moving to Malaysia to finish her high school and briefly engaged in a diploma in fashion designing, before returning in Mumbai. After beginning a career as a model, she met director Ram Gopal Varma on an elevator in 2012, who offered her a role in one of his future ventures. She was subsequently signed on to appear in his bilingual crime film, Satya 2 (2013), shot in Hindi and Telugu, based on the Mumbai underworld. The film and Anaika's performance opened to negative reviews, with a reviewer from The Hindu noting "Anaika tries too hard to be erotic and fails miserably in a role that makes her look dumb instead of naïve", while Rediff.com noted she was a "bad actress".


She is currently filming for Vasanthabalan's Tamil period film Kaaviya Thalaivan starring alongside Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhicka. She was signed for the film while working on Satya 2, and subsequently shot for the film in rural Tamil Nadu, revealing she worked on acting like a princess to get into character.

Manishajith is a south Indian actress who acts mainly in Tamil language films

Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant are a pair of musician brothers, born and brought up in Bhuj, Kutch, Gujarat, India. They belong to an Ismaili Muslim family and are inspired by their father Sadruddin Merchant, who used to lead Ismaili Scouts Orchestra in India.Steeped in a family tradition of music as the sons of composer and veteran of the film industry Sadruddin Merchant, Salim mastered the piano on at the Trinity College of Music in London while Sulaiman took up tabla training with such legends as Taufiq Qureshi and Ustad Zakir Hussain. They emerged as popular music directors only in 2003, six years after their first music composition in a Bollywood film. They received recognition with their award-winning performance for their music in Bhoot, in which the music was a very influential and significant aspect of the movie. Their music in the award-winning movie Iqbal earned them rave accolades.


Salim and Sulaiman have been composing music for over a decade having scored for movies such as Neal 'n' Nikki, Chak De! India, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Fashion. The duo had also composed for many Indi-pop performers including Viva, Aasmaan, Shweta Shetty, Jasmine and Style Bhai among others, composed and produced several TV commercials and collaborated with artistes such as Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan. They got their first break when Karan Johar asked them to compose the music for his movie Kaal. After that, they have gone to do movies with well-known producers and directors like Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Ram Gopal Varma. Before composing music, they were composing the background scores for movies.


Salim Merchant was one of the three judges for the Fifth season of Indian Idol on Sony Entertainment Television (India) . Later in 2012; Salim Merchant sang "Ishq Wala Love" opposite Neeti Mohan and Shekhar Ravjiani for which he received rave reviews from critics. The song topped the music lists for a long period of time; thus becoming a chart-buster and a high commercial success. "Ishq Wala Love" remains one of the most listened songs on gaana.com(Popular music website throughout the globe). In the annual Top 100 songs of Radio Mirchi; Ishq Wala Love featured in the top 30, ranking at No. 13 respectively. The song became the biggest hit of Student of the Year as well as Salim Merchant's all-time biggest critical and commercial success till date.


They have worked on a Bollywood remix for Lady Gaga's songs Born This Way and Judas. The duo are also composing music for the Hollywood film Sold, produced by Academy Award winner Jeffrey D. Brown.

Krithi Shetty is an Indian film actress appearing in Tamil and Kannada films.

At one of her Bharatanatyam performances, theatre director Jai Theertha, noticed the actress's talent and convinced her to join Samasthi Sunday School of Drama. Consequently, she pursued a diploma course in drama and performed in a play titled ‘Preethi’, later having an opportunity to play the lead role in 'Sadarame’, performing all over the state of Karnataka. Krithi collaborated with director Sunil Kumar Desai, and bagged the lead role in the Kannada film Sarigama. At the same time, she met Murali from the Tamil film industry who offered her an opportunity to play the lead role in Sagakkal directed by Swami. The actress then starred in Suseenthiran's critically acclaimed Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai (2011) alongside Inigo Prabhakaran, before featuring in another little known Tamil film Kondaan Koduthaan, the following year.

In 2013, she changed her screen name from Advaitha to her original name in time for the release of Snehavin Kadhalargal. She noted that the name Advaitha had been chosen for numerological reasons, but stated she did not like the way people pronounced the name.She worked again with Suseenthiran, portraying a small role in Pandiya Naadu. Her future projects include Maanga with Premgi Amaren, Sevili and the heroine-centric Snehavin Kadhalargal.

Navika Kotia is an Indian film and television child actress. She is also the elder sister of Shivansh Kotia. Currently, she is playing the role of Chikki in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus.

Ranya Rao is an Indian actress and model who appears in South Indian films. She made her debut with the 2014 Kannada film, Maanikya.

Ranya Rao originally hails from the Chikmagalur district of the Indian state of Karnataka. After completing her schooling in Kodagu, she began pursuing her graduation in engineering at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore. Eager to pursue a career in acting, she dropped out and began training at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute in Mumbai. Around this time, she started out as a model.

Rao was first signed by actor and director Sudeep in April 2014 for his directorial Kannada film, Maanikya. She was cast as Varalakshmi in a supporting role, portraying a girl belonging to a rich Indian family and Sudeep's love interest. Her performance received mixed reviews from critics. A. Sharadhaa of The New Indian Express wrote, "Both Ranya and Varalaxmi play their parts well but fail to impress."

In June 2015, Rao signed her second film and first Tamil film, Wagah.She is cast opposite Vikram Prabhu, and is her first film as a female lead. Around the same time, she also signed her second Kannada film Pataki and is cast opposite Ganesh.
