She then got introduced to the Tamil film industry by R. Parthiban in his film Kudaikul Mazhai (2004), enacting the lead female role and changing her screen name to Madhumitha, named after her character in the film.

Though the film wasn't a major success, Madhumitha received several offers from Tamil directors. She played leading roles in several Tamil films like Amudhey (2005), Englishkaran (2005) opposite Sathyaraj and Namitha and Naalai (2006), which, however, did not fetch her any recognition, despite being moderate successes. She then appeared in the 2007 Tamil independent film Aanivaer, a film about the Sri Lankan Civil War, in which she enacted the role of doctor.

Since the film was released in many Western Tamil diasporal regions, she became widely noticed by the Tamil audience, winning accolades for her performance. In 2008, she appeared in the Tamil comedy film Arai En 305-il Kadavul, directed by Simbudevan, acting along with comedy actors Santhanam and Ganja Karuppu, essaying the role of a sex worker, which fetched her much critical acclaim. She was next seen in Yogi, opposite director-turned-actor Ameer Sultan, and Solla Solla Inikkum, both which failed to achieve commercial success. Her performance in the former as a young mother living in the Chennai slums, was critically praised, winning her a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 3rd Vijay Awards.

Madhumitha married her longtime boyfriend, actor Shiva Balaji on 1 March 2009 at Kalinga Function Place in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Shiva Balaji was her co-actor in her film Englishkaran, eventually marrying him, after romancing for 3 three years. The engagement was held on 21 August 2008 in Hyderabad.

She simultaneously appeared in several commercial successes in Sinhala Cinema like Anjalika , Asai Man Piyabanna, Suwanda Denuna Jeewithe and Kusa Pabha, thus establishing herself as one of the leading actresses of Sinhala cinema.

Pooja's mother Sandhya is a Sri Lankan Sinhalese and her father H.R.Umashankar is an Indian Kannadiga Brahmin from Sringeri in Chikmagalur district, Karnataka. Uma Shankar was at Valparai working with Hindustan Unilever Limited as a manager. He was not at all interested in film industry but she was attached to it. Pooja can speak Kannada, Sinhalese, Tamil and English. She did her early schooling in Poornapragnya in Aldur,Chikmagalur and Nirmala Convent in Mysore. Later she continued her education at Baldwin's Girls High school in Bangalore and did graduation (B.Com) and Post Graduation (MBA) at the prestigious Mount Carmel College in Bangalore

Pooja was introduced by a friend of her to cinematographer turned director Jeeva, who signed her for the role of Anglo-Indian girl in his Tamil venture Ullam Ketkumae. She was soon offered a role opposite R. Madhavan, which she could not decline and made her rethink her decision. Ullam Ketkumae's massive delay meant that her second film, the romantic comedy Jay Jay 2004, directed by Saran, became her first official release. Pooja received favorable reviews for her performance in Jay Jay, G. Ulaganathan from Deccan Herald wrote:Spirited, lively, Pooja's sparkling eyes and smile do leave an impression. Similarly a critic from nowrunning.com noted: mong the two new heroines, it is Pooja who scores with her good performance and dances.

She next played the romantic interest of Ajith Kumar in another Saran film, Attahasam, which, in spite of mixed critical response, went on to become a financial success. Pooja, too, met with criticism, with critics citing that she had only limited role and was wasted in an insignificant and half-baked role. Pooja's subsequent release happened to be Ullam Ketkumae that featured her in one of the five leading roles alongside Shaam, Laila, Arya and Asin. The film fetched positive remarks and emerged as a sleeper hit.

She went to appear in several hits like Thambi and Pori which finally established her as a star heroine in Tamil cinema. In 2007, Pooja also appeared in her only Malayalam film till date, Panthaya Kozhi. She bagged the lead female role in Bala's Naan Kadavul. Her portrayal of Hamshavalli, a blind beggar, was critically appreciated and earned her several accolades, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil and Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Female Character Artiste.

After graduating from Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School he earned his bachelors degree in commerce. He then went on to obtain a Masters in Business Management, and this was followed by a brief stay in Mumbai where he was an Assistant Brand Manager for a leading media company. It was in Mumbai, while dining at a restaurant, that he got an offer to audition for an television commercial to be directed by Dibakar Banerjee of Khosla Ka Ghosla fame, and the success of that fetched him more commercials. During this period he was also dubbing in Tamil for cartoons and children's shows being aired on television channels, notably being the Tamil voice of the Red Ranger in Power Rangers - Mystic Force and the White Ranger in Power Rangers SPD.

He then quit his job and came back to Chennai to try and find work as an assistant director, but before he could do so Director Ravi Varman's team members saw his ad work and called him to audition for Moscowin Kavery. The film introduced a host of new actors including Samantha, with music carried out by Thaman, then making his debut in music composing. However, due to Ravi Varman's date conflicts with his projects as a cinematographer, the film languished in development hell, eventually releasing in August 2010. The film gained unanimously poor reviews from critics, with Rahul winning mixed reviews for his performance. While a critic from Behindwoods.com noted that "he looks every bit the suave software professional", other critics saying that his performance was "wooden" and that he "smiles too much and looks like he could do well, given the chance".

He was next seen in Vignesh Menon's Vinmeengal, where he played Jeeva, who is affected by cerebral palsy. The film which also featured Anuja Iyer, Bhavana Rao and Pandiarajan won above average reviews, with Rahul's performance being appreciated. The Indian Express cited that "Rahul brings out splendidly not just the physicality of his character, but also the emotional trauma", while Behindwoods.com noted that "the handsome Rahul Ravindran utilizes his opportunity and delivers the goods well." However, the critic from The Hindu noted "at times Rahul's trauma doesn't come out effectively, so you feel he could have done better".  His third film, Chellamuthu's Soorya Nagaram opposite Meera Nandan faced a much smaller release and won average reviews from critics. Playing Vetrivel, a shop mechanic in Madurai, the film focussed on inter-caste marriage and parental opposition, with a critic citing that Rahul is "good and emotes well".

He is dating Chinmayi Sripada and getting married with her in early 2014.
