She first appeared in a Telugu film, Lifestyle. Later on, she got into modelling, endorsing local and international brands such as Joyalukkas Jewelry, Microsoft Windows, Fair and Handsome cream, Chennai Silks, Shankaram diamond jewellery, Brook Bond Taza tea, Paaneri Sarees, Lee Cooper, Red Square Energy Drink, Radio Mirchi and ESSAR, and Anytime Fitness gym. She has also been a regular model for the fashion industry, as well as in prominent Indian magazines.


In 2011, she made a special appearance in a dance number in Dookudu, the year's highest grossing Telugu film.Following Dookudu, she was also chosen by the producers of the Bodyguard remake to do a dance number, hoping that it would repeat the success of her number in Dookudu. She also performed an item number in the Tamil film Billa II, considered to be one of her biggest project to be done yet. 2014 she was seen in lead roles in two films. She essayed the role of a princess in the Tamil period-comedy Tenaliraman  while the thriller-drama Adavi Kachina Vennela saw her playing an aspiring sharp shooter, with the actress also performing stunts in the film. She will be making her Hindi debut with P Se PM Tak in which she plays a call girl.

In 2011, she made her feature film debut in the musical romantic drama Bollywood film, Rockstar, directed by Imtiaz Ali. She played the female lead role of Heer Kaul, the girl who falls in love with Jordan (played by Ranbir Kapoor), who eventually becomes a famous international artist, but their relationship is obstructed by her marriage and a series of health problems. She ends up breaking his heart and dying whilst pregnant with his child.

The film was a hit, performing well at the box office, however Fakhri's performance received mixed reviews, with some stating that she was overshadowed by Kapoor, but with others branding her as "promising." She received nominations at several award ceremonies, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.

Fakhri is currently signed on for a three film contract with Akshay Kumar's Hari Om Productions.

Fakhri received critical acclaim for her role as a British war correspondent, Jaya Sahni, in Shoojit Sircar's political espionage thriller Madras Cafe, where she featured alongside John Abraham. Her performance was branded "exceptional" by one critic and it was stated that she "strikes the right notes."

Fakhri did extensive research for the role, and was widely appreciated for having come a long way in terms of performance. She made a special appearance in the item number "Dhating Naach" in Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, which was released in September 2013. She is currently filming for Main Tera Hero, a David Dhawan film co-starring Varun Dhawan and Ileana D'Cruz, to be released in April 2014.
