Balaji was born on 25 May 1987 in Trichy to a Telugu father and a Tamil mother. He pursued his schooling in Campion Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Trichy and later joined the SSN College of Engineering in Chennai for his higher studies, albeit he had decided in 10th class already that he wanted to become a director. He recalls that his parents bought him a handycam in his third semester, and he made his first short film called Velicham, which was also sent to film festivals and won. Although he had initially planned to complete his education before following his passion and pursuing a career in filmmaking, he did not want to "wait for too long" after making Velicham. After convincing his parents, he discontinued his engineering course two years later and went on to join the L. V. Prasad Film and TV Academy in Vadapalani, Chennai to learn editing and sound design. He also studied acting at Alchemy Institute, Adyar, Chennai.

Balaji began his career as an assistant director for the Tamil film called Kulir 100° (2009). While the film was in its pre-production stage, he got the opportunity to join the Gateway to Hollywood, a show that was aired in Sony TV. His short film Treasure was featured in the contest and Balaji became one of the 6 finalists of the show. He later joined as an assistant director for Sudha K. Prasad's Tamil film Drohi (2010), while simultaneously participating in Kalaignar TV's first season of Naalaya Iyakunar. He directed five short films namely Kodi, The Juniors, Addi Tail, Mittai Veedu and Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi for the show and was one of the winners of the series award for consistent performance.

Among his works, Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi was most popular and went viral on YouTube, garnering overwhelming response. Cinematographer Nirav Shah saw the short film and initiated the idea to make it into a full length feature film. Balaji took three months to develop the script, while Nirav Shah reached out to producers and actors, introducing him to producer Sashikanth of YNot Movies. Siddharth, who too was keen on turning the short film into a feature film after he had seen it, entered the project, essaying the lead role besides co-producing the venture. The film was made as a bilingual in Tamil and Telugu; while the original title was given for the Tamil version, the Telugu version was named Love Failure, with the cast and crew being retained for both versions. The project was completed in a record 36 days, and both versions of the film were released simultaneously in February 2012 in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, respectively. Opening to highly positive critical response, the film was emerged a sleeper hit in both states.

For any singer aspiring to gain a foothold in the film industry, knocking the doors of music companies with demo CDs, singing chorus numbers and endless waits to meet music directors are the usual way of packaging and marketing oneself.

But none of these were on the schedule sheet of J.K.V. Roshini when she hoped for a career in music. And yet, the young singer managed to earn a label as one of the frequently recorded singers in the industry.

Like any Carnatic music learning kid, Roshini, in her class III, flaunted her open and hi-ranged voice through the krithi ‘Manasa Sancharare’ during the annual day. And that’s when Lady Luck smiled on her. Music director Vidyasagar, the chief guest of the day, booked her for a song in the movie ‘Aaha Enna Porutham.’

Music directors found her voice suitable for child artistes which helped her . After a song in Packiaraj-starrer ‘Vaetiya Madichu Kattu,’ she wanted to put her formal training in Carnatic music to some use and began accepting a great deal of offers to sing for devotional albums. When the film offers became too tempting, the Tiruchi-girl decided to shift her base to Chennai.

The arc of Roshini’s career had its major twist when music director Srikanth Deva singled out the distinctive voice of the third-year-engineering student performing at a talent show. The song ‘Potu Thaaku’ from ’Kutthu’ was what he had to offer which, she felt, played a key role in helping her emerge as a good singer of fast numbers.

She soon found herself competing with celebrity singers. Just as the popularity of ‘Potu Thaaku’ began to fade, she gave yet another hit of the year through ‘Karuppana Kaiyale’ from ‘Tamirabarani.’ And even if none of her dreams work out, she still will have a career to turn to and perhaps, earn more. Even as she religiously accepts the offers knocking her door, Roshini is all set to face the interviews of software multinationals slated at her college.

Roshini along with her sister Anita performed the feat of 'singing non-stop for 37 hours', which fetched them a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Bharath made his acting debut in the 2003 Tamil film Boys directed by S. Shankar, in which he played the guitarist of a boy band. He was selected for the role, after Shankar had seen him performing at a dance programme "Inspirations" at the Music Academy by Swingers. In 2004, he first appeared in his first and only Malayalam film till date, the Jayaraj-directed vigilante film 4 The People, portraying one of the four protagonists. Supported by a highly popular soundtrack by Jassie Gift, the film went on to become a blockbuster, grossing  3 crores at the Kerala box office and turning out the highest-grossing Malayalam film of that year. The film was subsequently dubbed into Tamil as 4 Students, and Telugu as Yuvasena, with its Tamil version emerging a box office success as well.
Later that year, he essayed the antagonist role in Chellamae, alongside Vishal and Reema Sen. His portrayal of Vishwa, a possessive teenager who kidnaps his childhood friend he is obsessed with and married to someone else, was appreciated by critics. It also was an economical success. He played his first starring role in Balaji Sakthivel's romantic-drama film Kaadhal that featured him as a poor mechanic who falls in love and elopes with a wealthy 12th standard student, portrayed by then debutante Sandhya. The film, produced by Shankar, received critical acclaim and was also commercially successful. Also, his performance as the naïve but sweet lover was highly praised. Pattiyal, a gangster thriller in which he shared screen space with Arya, was his first release in 2006. The Vishnuvardhan-directorial opened to very positive critical response and went to become a high financial success, with Bharath garnering accolades for his performance as a deaf and dumb hitman[14] Later that year, he starred in Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu, Em Magan, Chennai Kadhal and Veyil. While Chennai Kadhal, a romance film by Vikraman, bombed at the box office, Thirumurugan's family drama film Em Magan was declared a hit film. He has received great accolades for Veyyil, which also emerged a commercial success and was selected for screening at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
Following Veyyil, Bharath experienced a setback in his career as his subsequent releases—with the exception of Pazhani—proved critically and commercially unsuccessful. He was facing an "image crisis" as he signed up for action and masala films and went on play repetitive roles as a "larger than life angry young man", essaying "small town rowdy" or "guy seeking revenge" roles. Koodal Nagar, in which he starred alongside Bhavana and Sandhya, was his only release in 2007. He portrayed a dual role in the film which was a box office flop. In 2008 he appeared in Perarasu's Pazhani, which was a commercial success, following which Nepali, directed by Dhurai was released. Though the film is considered a box office bomb, Bharath received rave reviews for his performance. That year he had two more releases, Muniyandi Vilangial Moonramandu, which saw him collaborating with the Em Magan team again, and Hari's Seval, none of which succeeded. In 2009 he acted in Arumugam, directed by Suresh Krishna and Kandein Kadhalai, the Tamil remake of the 2007 Hindi blockbuster Jab We Met. The latter featured him in a totally contrasting role as a rich businessman, and became his only commercial success in two years. In 2010, he had a single release with Thambikku Indha Ooru which became a critical and commercial failure.
In 2011, he appeared in the multi-starrer Vaanam as Bharath Chakravarthy, a guitarist, with the film becoming a successful venture at the box office. Post-release, Bharath clashed with the producer and another actor in the film, Silambarasan, claiming he did not receive as much promotion and publicity as Silambarasan's character. His recent film was the romantic comedy Yuvan Yuvathi with Rima Kallingal that released to mixed reviews. He is currently working on the action-masala film Thiruthani for which he teams up with director Perarasu once again. Furthermore he will make an extended guest appearance in Vasanthabalan's Aravaan and will play the lead role in Sasi's 555.

He completed his schooling from BHEL Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Trichy. He has a younger brother. Prasanna was good at mimicry and acting, when he was in school and college. He had stated that he always wanted to become an actor. He was a EEE student in Saranathan College of Engineering, Tiruchirapalli when he responded to an open audition for actors in Susi Ganesan's Five Star (2002), although his parents were unhappy with his decision. During the filming of Achchamundu! Achchamundu! it was reported Sneha and he was in love, but he denied that he has no idea in marrying any actress.

Prasanna married Sneha, a fellow actor and elder by one year, on the 11th of May, 2012 .

Five Star, produced by Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, featured Prasanna alongside four other newcomers, most notably Kanika; it was well received by critics and performed modestly at the box office. His next two films, Ragasiyamai (2003) and Kadhal Dot Com (2004), did not fare well commercially. After Five Star, his noteworthy performance came in Azhagiya Theeye (2004). He cites that the time between Five Star and Azhagiya Theeye was "a painful one", since the roles offered to him were "not the ones" he wanted to play. The film, involving an ensemble cast, was produced by Prakash Raj's Duet Movies and directed by Radha Mohan. Critics commented that he had improved in emoting, labelling his "voice modulation in the humorous scenes" as "impressive". Prakash Raj, impressed by his performance in the film, offered him the lead character in his next production, Kanda Naal Mudhal, too. The triangular love story, directed by the newcomer V. Priya, costarring Laila and Karthik Kumar, was a commercial success. The comedy flick Cheena Thaana 001 co-starring Sheela and Vadivelu was his only 2007 release.

In 2008, he was seen in three films. He starred in Siddique's comedy thriller Sadhu Miranda. His role of a modern day villain was a huge hit in Mysskin's film Anjathey. His negative role was critically acclaimed and fetched him a nomination at the 56th Filmfare Awards South in the Best Supporting Actor category. He played the lead in Arun Vaidyanathan's Achchamundu! Achchamundu! (2009) opposite Sneha that dealt with the subject of pedophiles. It received rave reviews, and was very well received internationally, but failed at the domestic box office. Manjal Veyil, yet another flick was a big flop. During the period, he also worked as a voice actor, speaking dubbing for Aryan Rajesh in Cheran's Pokkisham on the insistence of the director.

However, in the recent times he has been losing out more offers. Earlier, he had signed up for a film titled Naikkutty produced by V. Z. Durai but he stepped out due to some unknown reasons. Again in Bale Pandiya directed by Siddharth Chandrasekhar, Prasanna was replaced by Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu fame Vishnu Vishal. He was seen in a cameo appearance in Venkat Prabhu's comedy film Goa, followed by a supporting role as a local gangster in Baana Kaathadi. A review from Times of India wrote that "with his eyes-to-die-for and underplayed violence, Prasanna easily steals the show".  In 2011, he performed a lead role alongside director-actor Cheran in the thriller film Muran. His character, a "spoiled brat" and son of a millionaire, had again negative shades. He was also approached for Lucky Jokers which he could not take due to his busy schedule with Muran. He has been approached to play a vital role in Dileep's production Akku Akbar.
