Mani Ratnam held discussions with Fahad Fazil, on a bilingual in Tamil and Malayalam. After the project failed to materialize, Mani Ratnam held discussions with Chiranjeevi and his son Ram Charan about other potential projects, before finalising to make a multi-starrer featuring Ram Charan and Allu Arjun in leading roles. However after further script discussion, Ram Charan opted against working on the project, noting it lacked the potential of being a commercial success. In August 2014, Dulquer Salmaan was signed on to replace Ram Charan in the leading role. Reports suggested that Nivin Pauly had also signed on to appear in the film, which would supposedly be a remake of Mani Ratnam\'s yesteryear film Mouna Raagam (1986), though Nivin later clarified that he was not a part of the project.
Alia Bhatt was considered to play the leading female role but did not take up the offer. Pooja Hedge was also offered the role, but was unable to take it up due to contractual obligations that prevented her from working in any film until her Bollywood debut film Mohenjo Daro (2016) releases. The team subsequently held discussions with Nithya Menen for the role, while Parvathy was also considered, before the former was finalised.Prakash Raj was also selected to appear in a role in the film. Television anchor Ramya Subramaniam also worked in the film, partaking in her first major film role. Actress Kanika revealed she shot for day with the team and would make a cameo appearance in the project. Produced by Mani Ratnam\'s home studio Madras Talkies, the film will feature music composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics written by Vairamuthu. Rahman has also announced that his son Ameen will be singing for the film\'s soundtrack.Meanwhile P. C. Sreeram was signed on to be the film\'s cinematographer, collaborating with Mani Ratnam again after their critically acclaimed work in Alaipayuthey (2000). Eka Lakhani, who worked with Mani Ratnam in his previous venture Kadal (2013), was retained as costume director. The film was subsequently titled Okay Kanmani during the first schedule, taken from the song \"Pottu Vaitha\" from Singaravelan (1992).
