Full Biography of Director R. K. Selvamani

R. K. Selvamani is a Tamil film director. He was known to make movies of the police or whodunit genre.

R. K. Selvamani made his debut with the thriller Pulan Visaranai which was based on a confession by Auto Shankar that he had kidnapped many girls at the behest of some political bigwigs. This movie starring Vijaykanth was the biggest hit of 1990 in Tamil. It also fetched a state award for Sarath Kumar for his portrayal of the villain character. He also made two movies based on the assassination of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The latter (based on Rajiv\'s assassination) got embroiled into controversies with the Indian Film Censor Board and was cleared only recently (fourteen years after its completion). He also made Captain Prabhakaran starring Vijaykanth in 1991 which is both the director\'s and Vijaykanth\'s biggest hit. He then made Chembaruthi an unusual love story starring Roja and Prashanth in 1992.

In 1995, he directed Makkal Aatchi with Mammootty in the lead, which became a superhit and he again directed a film Arasiyal with Mammootty in the lead, which released with great expectation but was an average grosser. In 1997, the director once again launched another political drama venture titled Indian Express which would narrate the happenings of an event which had occurred in Trivandrum. However despite signing up Sarath Kumar to play the lead role as well as Roja and Anupam Kher, the film became stalled and was discontinued after the launch. So he retired in 1999 (though he directed Roja\'s 100th film Durga in 2001). After being instrumental in launching the TV Channel \"Tamilthirai\", however he had resigned from it later. His recent venture Pulan Visaranai-2 with Prashanth as hero is delayed.

He married actress Roja who starred in his films such as Chembaruthi, Raja Muthirai and Makkal Aatchi in 2001. He mortgaged his property in Chennai to bail out his wife from a cheque bounce case. R. K. Selvaman is now Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Directors association. He is a strong supporter for the Eelam Tamils.
