The very next year, the actress returned to her residence in Chennai and decided to stay back and concentrate in acting career. Following this, the actress filed a divorce petition in the family court in Chennai and without her husband’s knowledge she obtained the divorce.

When Sridharan came to know of this, he filed a writ petition in the High Court of Madras that the divorce obtained in Chennai is not binding on him as the marriage had taken place in the US and hence the court here had no jurisdiction.

In an order passed in this issue, the judge ruled that the wife can file for divorce in her home town irrespective of where her marriage had taken place, according to the Hindu Marriage Act, Section 13 since their wedding took place as per the Hindu norms and customs. The judge further ruled that the issue be settled within two months.
